On Writing Our Stories, Lifting Our Voices, and Getting the Word Out
March, being Women’s History Month, was filled with events that shined the light on the importance of women writing our stories, uplifting our voices and the people and organizations who provide support, visibility and help spread the word about authors and their books.
Being on The Women’s History Month panel with four fellow women authors at Book Passage in Corte Madera, CA, sharing The Peach Seed and talking about the process of writing and storytelling with middle school, high school and for the LibGuides, College of Marin students led to fascinating conversations.
A Shout-Out to Poets & Writers Organization & Magazine
As a debut author, it’s tough out there to get good exposure for your work. Poets & Writers, a non-profit, has been very helpful to me and other creative writers with social media training and opportunities that increase visibility and help spread the word. I was delighted to support them by serving as a Table Host at their 2024 Poets & Writers Gala which is their major fundraising event.

CHECK OUT ANITA’S ESSAY, FINDING MY STARTING POINT: Just published in Poets & Writers March-April 2024:
We writers face finding a starting point every time we set out to tell a new story. For my own promotional journey, this story began with the intrinsic value of the Get the Word Out application process, which required that I pause, take stock, and once again decide how to talk about my work and figure out what was missing from my promotional toolbox.
LAST GEORGIA TOUR EVENTS REFLECTIONS (from Anita)
Landed safely back in San Francisco Bay on Monday evening—with all my bags this time—and thanks to AirTags, I knew exactly where they were at all times. Still no news on the one lost right out the gate on Feb 10th.
Savannah State University Black Heritage Festival
It’s always a pleasure to be in the company of young folk talking about The Peach Seed. SSU honor students came out in numbers. They were joined by other students and folk from the community. I was in conversation with the dynamic Tamia Smith.
Authors Market Dougherty County Library Northwest Branch, Albany, GA
My late mother, Mrs. Irene Gaines Jones, was a 6th grade teacher and school librarian in Worth County Georgia for 39 years so — I have a special place in my heart for Librarians. Many thanks to Krista Dixon and team for a wonderful time at Dougherty Co. Library’s 2nd annual Local Author Market, held at the palatial Northwest Branch, 2507 Dawson Road, Albany, GA. (Locals: do you know about their Events Center? Best deal in town!).
During my book tour travels the last few months, I’ve been impressed by the grand buildings, warm inviting people and beautifully curated stacks in libraries throughout my home state of Georgia.

FEBRUARY 24, 2024 UPDATE
Cheryl, here. A quick update as Anita is catching her breath before flying back to the San Francisco Bay area.
Anita said today’s AUTHOR MARKET in Albany, GA featuring Southwest Georgia authors “was an amazing event” for both authors and eager readers, especially with Albany being the setting for part of The Peach Seed. She has lots of photos and stories to share from the event that she’ll be writing up after a little R&R.
If you haven’t subscribed to her newsletter, the AGJInsider, do so as she will be sharing more in-depth stories and articles there.
As Anita heads back to the Bay area, she will be participating in events in celebration of Women’s History Month. First up:

NEXT UP for Georgia Peeps: SAT. FEB. 24 | 11AM ~ 2:00 PM EST | AUTHOR MARKET | Northwest Library | Albany, GA
On the uneventful almost 3 Hour drive from Atlanta to Albany Sunday night, but…
Beastly Atlanta freeways are like asphalt rivers, ever slowing, ever narrowing into tributaries —Anita Gail Jones Plus, lively Southwest Georgia gatherings, a visit to Alice Walker and a surprise cousin!
We had a small but lively group gather at Morgan County Library in Madison, GA. My my cousin Saundra McLester joined me. So nice to have Georgia family members in the audience, adding bits and pieces to the history of the book.
Then I had to check out the Alice Walker exhibit at the Georgia Writers Museum in Eatonton, GA, her birthplace. Saundra and I drove about 20 miles to it. Captured photos and video. It’s a beautifully curated museum.
Before leaving Atlanta, I dropped in for what was to be a book signing and possible meet and greet curated by my new friend, Patience, who manages Hills & Hamlets Bookshop in Chattahoochee Hills, GA.
What a beautiful surprise to walk in and find more than a handful of folks who look like me, including a cousin, Norris, who I had never met! He came bearing a photocopy booklet, with family names, and pictures, many I’d never seen and others I knew well; so we had a two person reunion right there in the store!
After Saturday’s Author Market event in Albany, I am heading back to the San Francisco Bay area for a good rest before more events including some exciting news: I’ll be speaking at the Sonoma Valley Authors Festival April 26-28 and at the 10th Annual Bay Area Book Festival, June 1-2. If you are around the Bay area, these are two great events to meet inspiring authors and fellow book enthusiasts.

FEBRUARY 17, 2024 UPDATE
NEXT UP IN GEORGIA: WED. FEB. 18 1 ~2PM EST| Hills & Hamlets Bookshop | Chattahoochee Hills, GA
Yes, I have moved on to those sweet, sweet parts of Georgia (sans luggage) that I call home for a series of events from tomorrow, the 18th, through the Feb. 24th. But first a quick update about recent wonderful events in New York City.
The Franklin Park Reading Series in Brooklyn, NY was a rare opportunity to listen to four fellow authors read from their books, in addition to sharing The Peach Seed. Engaging in a lively conversation with the audience was such a pleasure. Presenting authors: Marie-Helene Bertino, Emily Schultz, Sidik Fofana,Christina Cooke, Will Mountain Cox, and Anita Gail Jones.
On the 13th, in spite of the slushy cold, snowy New York City weather, we gathered in-person and on Zoom for a warm, lively Pop-Up Book Club conversation. (This Pop-Up Book Club does author events in different people’s homes in Manhattan.) My daughter, Miranda, joined us, which is always a plus!
Being in the company of readers and fellow authors who strongly embraced the story, and took time to formulate insightful questions and comments was such a joy! They showed me aspects of the story I had not thought about. LOVE when that happens.
We also talked about manuscript and agent issues, like one manuscript pass dedicated to eradicating unnecessary occurrences of “the.” Took awhile, but it was worth it. And what does knitting have to do with finalizing the manuscript edit process? It felt like knitting the most intricate sweater: you have to be willing to rip.
Thanks to author and curator Jean Hanff Korelitz for the invitation. We met last August when we were table neighbors at the East Hampton Library Author’s Night.
Wedding dress, anyone? This trip hasn’t been all work: also included a trip deep into NYC’s Chinatown for Miranda to try on wedding dresses! A small cluster of us had a great time, but she has not said “yes to the dress” just yet.
Onward to Georgia events including:
Feb. 21 6:00PM EST: The W.W. Law Lecture Series III: Author Talk and Book Signing at The 35th Annual Savannah Black Heritage Festival at Savannah State University. Join us!
FEBRUARY 13, 2024 UPDATE
NEXT UP IN NYC: WED. FEB. 14 6PM EST| Sister’s Uptown Bookstore & Cultural Center | Harlem, NY
Surprise! is the word for Day 1 and Day 2 of The Peach Seed Black History Month Book Tour!
What do you do when you arrive in New York City for three back-to-back book events and your luggage still hasn’t arrived? You go shopping on Delta’s dime for clothes and supplies (though I would rather be preparing for my events).
And what do you do when you wake up on Day 2 to New York City in snow! You bundle up, grab your phone for photos and head out to Central Park West. The bottom left photo is near Lennon’s Imagine Medallion which was covered in snow.
Last night I, along with other wonderful authors, read from our books at the Franklin Park Reading Series event in Brooklyn, NY. Again, another surprise! I met up with Lauren Cerand (top left) who headed our 2022 inaugural cohort for Get The Word Out publicity incubator through @poetswritersinc. I’m so grateful for her expert guidance and loved sharing our The Peach Seed journey with her.
When it snows in New York City, plans adjust! Tonight’s ticketed event, Book the Writer Pop-Up Book Club event in Manhattan is switching from some in-person to mostly Zoom. Thank goodness for technology. More about this in the next update.
Meanwhile, if you are in New York City, join us tonight—6PM EST—in Harlem at Sister’s Uptown Bookstore & Cultural Center. It’s free and open to the public. I’d love to meet you!
FEBRUARY 11, 2024 UPDATE
…And she’s off to New York City for the start of her 2024 Black History Month Tour!
(Cheryl, here, with Anita to update you about what’s up ahead as well as recent happenings)
Note from Anita:
After a lovely holiday respite, I’m hitting the road again for another East Coast tour, landing in four cities (New York City, Atlanta, Albany and Savannah, GA) : signing books, mixing and mingling with booksellers and readers, doing author talks/conversations, audience Q&As, and screening our fabulous book trailer. Most events are free and open to the (adult) public. Hope to see you along the journey!

RECENT HAPPENINGS AND GOOD NEWS!
This break between tours has been filled with a colorful patchwork of experiences, from watering the garden with The Dirt Club at a local school and a lively conversation about The Peach Seed with Marin Oaks high school students who gave me their take on issues, story and characters as well as their feedback (one student confidently told me about a piece of the story he thought was unnecessary).
Then a published essay. If you want to know what inspires and motivates me when I’m in that deep trench of writing and what saved me during the pandemic, check out my Essay on Poet & Writers Writers Recommend (published early January, 2024).
Book Clubs and Author Conversations! We have had fascinating conversations about The Peach Seed with members of several San Francisco Bay area book clubs (along with making drop biscuits and a theme-related meal—a foodie’s dream), and author conversations at the Marin County Library and more.
And, yes, a few Made-the-List awards:
- The Peach Seed was selected as a 2024 Book All Georgians and Young Georgians Should Read by the Georgia Center for the Book.
- The Peach Seed Book Trailer made The 10 Best Book Trailers of 2023 from book trailer production company Film-14.
- Hills and Hamlets Bookshop chose The Peach Seed as one of Patience’s Favorite Books of 2023. Can we give a shout out to independent booksellers! They are like angels that help authors and books like The Peach Seed succeed! Please support them!
I continue being filled with gratitude for all of you helping to spread the word about The Peach Seed and to independent booksellers who are instrumental to the success of authors and their books like mine. Every single effort helps The Peach Seed rise!

Remember the great staff from The Bookshelf who provided the book sales at the ASU Homecoming last weekend? Today, I am on my way to their store in Thomasville, GA for a book reading/storytelling/signing and Q&A event this afternoon. Their staff is knowledgeable and fun. I’m grateful for their interest in spreading the word about The Peach Seed and getting it into the hands of readers who will enjoy it.
TOMORROW, SUNDAY MORNING, if you are in the Georgia area, I am on WALB’s Sunday Dialogue with Karla Health-Sands | 9AM on BOUNCE, 9:30AM on NBC and 10 AM on ABC (all times EST)

OCTOBER 17, 2023 UPDATE
A few photos from Saturday’s Albany State University Homecoming vendor event. Never having been a vendor with a booth before, I did not know what to expect! It began with light Southwest Georia mist, but we had fun. Thank you to The Bookshelf staff from Thomasville, GA for taking care of book sales and for bringing the tent. I loved meeting people, sharing The Peach Seed and making new friends. Thank you all!
👉🏾 JOIN US this SATURDAY. October 21, 2023 | 1PM EST at Bookshelf in Thomasville, GA for The Peach Seed book reading, storytelling, Q&A and book signing event. This a wonderful bookstore and community I discovered during my last SOWEGA trip.
OCTOBER 14, 2023 UPDATE
Today, I am in Albany, Georgia, my hometown and the setting for The Peach Seed—plus, it’s Homecoming at Albany State University which is in the book! We decided to get a booth at the vending event. What a great way to share The Peach Seed and meet people who could connect with its story, time and place!
👉🏾 TODAY, 9AM – 7PM, stop by our booth at East campus on Pedestrian Walkway (under the bridge). The wonderful staff at The Bookshelf in Thomasville, GA are here handling sales.
Having a booth is a new experience. A few things I have learned:
Knowing how to punt and adjust is important.
Prepare for early morning Georgia mist.
Walking around with The Peach Seed book, bookmarks and meeting people led to connecting with wonderful people who not only bought the book, they suggested other author and speaking opportunities.
Loved sharing South Georgia goodies with book buyers. They enjoyed them as well.

After a few Bay area events and a short break to catch up, I’m off today for my Southwest Georgia (SOWEGA) Book Tour beginning in Albany, Georgia, the setting for The Peach Seed. Events kick off with Homecoming activities at Albany State University which also features prominently in the book.
In 1961, Albany State students joined Martin Luther King, Jr., the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) for protests lasting eight months. It was the first major initiative of the civil rights movement, known as the Albany Movement, to attempt to desegregate an entire city.
As time allows, I will share updates from various events including a book reading and signing on Saturday, October 21, 1:00PM EST at The Bookshelf, a wonderful independent bookstore in Thomasville, GA. Then I will be back in the San Francisco Bay for several events including being a Featured Author at the 35th Annual Kidney Foundation Author Luncheon, October 28th, 12:00 – 3:00PM. Alameda, one of the West’s oldest independent bookstores, I thought you might enjoy more Scenes from The Peach Seed Book Tour (and Treks) through Northern California, Georgia and New York. The people I have met, the discovery of gems, serendipitous happenings, surprises and what I have learned during this boots-on-the-ground launch for my book have been extraordinary. More to come.
You also might enjoy my Author Talk interview that was just published in September’s Marin Magazine where I talk about the origin of The Peach Seed and how my work as a visual artist impacts my writing and creative process.

JULY 2, 2023 UPDATE
We are now one month out from my publisher Henry Holt & Co. launching my debut novel, The Peach Seed on August 1st! Excitement mounts day-by-day✨ and I’m grateful that the story is resonating with reviewers and readers.
I’ve spent the past two weeks getting ducks in a row with Buzz Professor, Cheryl McLaughlin, the architect of my just revealed Media Room where booksellers, readers, and media professionals will find everything from AGJ author portraits to introductions to reviews. It’s hard out here, and I can use all the help I can get amplifying my book so —feel free to pass the link along to interested parties.
Here’s a Quick Update ~
✳️ LAUNCH DAY: Tuesday, August 1st, I will be in NYC hopping around the city on a Peach Seed Book-Signing Trek; popping into a few select bookstores to sign copies plus meet & greet booksellers and readers. The schedule is TBD and will be posted here and on social media. If there’s a bookstore near you on the tour, please drop in and join the fun!
✳️ PREORDERS: A preorder is your vote, your voice in the book industry. Sends the message that you feel a book and its aesthetics and ideologies are worthy of publication; that the author deserves a seat at the table. Preorders also count toward the book’s all important first week of sales. You can still preorder The Peach Seed hard copy—and the audiobook, narrated by yours truly (!)
✳️ ESSENCE MAGAZINE: Thank you @OklaJones! Thrilled to be included in ESSENCE TBR list: 15 Books We Can’t wait to Read This Summer.
✳️ EVENT with CHEF TANYA HOLLAND: Save the date! Tuesday, October 24, 2023 I will join Oakland chef, Tanya Holland— of the now-closed restaurant, Brown Sugar Kitchen fame, and author of the new cookbook, California Soul — for a fundraising event as part of Homeward Bound of Marin’s Fresh Starts Chef Event series.
In celebration of National Book Month, Chef Tanya and I will be sharing an evening of soul food & stories, with recipe demonstrations, a reading + book-signing. Both our books will be available for purchase just in time to stock up for Christmas! Learn more/ buy tickets

Will preorder. Looking forward to reading a great novel after all the brain killing stuff I usually read.
BTW, don’t you have a quote after your emails regarding perseverance? We are not only proud but really impressed with what you have accomplished.

Thanks, Tom. I appreciate your kind words and patience listening to me talk about this book for the past 14+ years! True friends! And yes, this James Baldwin quote has been my mantra in my email signature for a while now” “Talent is insignificant. I know a lot of talented ruins. Beyond
talent lie all the usual words: discipline, love, luck, but most
of all, endurance.” —James Baldwin (1924-1987)
