Drop Biscuit Virtual Cook-ins
My debut novel, The Peach Seed, is set in my birthplace, southwest Georgia (SOWEGA). In the story, minor character, Florida Dukes Flowler, is famous for her drop biscuits—a SOWEGA favorite. I grew up devouring my maternal Auntie Curt’s drop biscuits. As an adult with my own kitchen, I quickly grew to love making these over the more traditional rolled biscuits or the hand-formed biscuits my mother, Ms. Irene, made. You just can’t beat drop biscuits for their crispy peaks and flaky insides.
My novel launched on August 1, 2023, and paperback released on July 30, 2024. This past year, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting several book clubs where readers have prepared amazing book-themed meals! This outpouring around food in the story was my incentive to do a limited series of virtual cook-ins featuring drop biscuits because they are quick and easy and oh so delicious! And like many themes I uplift in the novel, the drop biscuit is an undertold story in the culinary world. — Anita Gail Jones
Food is often more than a savory accessory in literature; it can be a character, or a device for uniting themes and advancing plot. In this series, Anita invites readers to join her and special guest authors in taking a deep dive into how writers use food in their storytelling.
There is plenty of delicious food in both The Peach Seed and Black Cake, and I’m thrilled to be kicking off this series with NY Times Bestselling author, Charmaine Wilkerson!
Your level of participation is completely your choice:
🧑🏾🍳 Join us in the grid with a glass or cup of something festive or soothing—hanging out and chatting —just as you would in a real kitchen!
🧑🏾🍳 Or Zoom in from your kitchen and bake along as Anita demos the making of her Auntie Curt’s drop biscuits.
While our biscuits are in the oven, Charmaine and I will continue conversing and answering questions from the chat. PLEASE NOTE: We won’t be making black cakes (much more involved a process!) but Charmaine will share many tasty tidbits from the Caribbean culture uplifted in her book, juxtaposed with my southwest Georgian food and stories.
Once the timer goes off, we’ll break into piping hot biscuits, share our results— and favorite condiments!—before wrapping up the session!
